Using ACTFL Proficiency Standards in the Classroom

Dr. Lindsay Sears

Recently, the state of Rhode Island endorsed the ACTFL Proficiency Standards as the state world language standards. But teachers who have never worked with proficiency standards before may not know how to use the standards in their classroom. This workshop will help participants rethink how to plan, teach, and assess using the ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the World-Readiness Standards as a framework. Participants will leave with concrete strategies for ways to use the standards to design tasks in both the presentational and interpretive modes of communication, as well as strategies for incorporating intercultural comparison into their curricula.

Lindsay Sears received her BA in Classics from Smith College and earned a PhD in Classics from Cornell University. She currently teaches Latin at Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, CT. She is a frequent presenter at second language conferences at the state, regional,  and national levels.

Coffee and light breakfast will be served.
